Tower. Sears' naming rights to the tower expired in
2003.
and, effective June 2009, the building will be renamed "Willis Tower"
for London insurer Willis Group, a move many Chicagoans are not very
pleased about.

Our Story
December 2, 1942, the Atomic Age began inside an
enormous tent on a squash court under the stands of the University of
Chicago's Stagg Field. There, scientists headed by Enrico Fermi
engineered the first controlled nuclear fission chain reaction. The
result, sustainable nuclear energy, led to creation of the atomic bomb
and nuclear power plants—two of the twentieth century's most powerful
and controversial achievements. Source: Library of Congress
1934: Bank robber John Dillinger, whose
exploits were sensationalized across the US, was shot dead by police in
an ambush outside the Biograph Theater in Chicago who
were informed of his whereabouts by the lady in red.
Al Capone; Capone's criminal career ended in
1931, when he was indicted and convicted by the federal government for
income-tax
evasion.
Capone arranged the most notorious gangland
killing of the century, the 1929 Saint Valentine's Day Massacre in
the Lincoln Park neighborhood on Chicago's North Side, although details
of the killing of the seven
victims in a garage at 2122 North Clark Street, (then
the SMC Cartage Co., are widely disputed and no one was ever brought to
trial for the crime.
